On Thursday, August 27, 2009, the Federation des Exportateurs de Vin et Spiritueux de France (FEVS, or Federation of French Exporters of Wines and Spirits) announced that in the first half of the year exports totaled €3.28 billion, down from €4.35 billion (see values in other currencies) in the same period last year, with a plunge of over 25%.
The group represents 85% of the country's wine and spirit exporters, and specified that exports of luxury products, such as Champagne and Cognac, fell 45% and 27% respectively, while exports of less expensive table wines fell 1% only.
Claude de Jouvencel, the president of the Federation, said that he is confident the market would stabilize in the second half of the year, when wine sales are traditionally higher because of the holiday season.

On the following day, Friday, August 28, Coldiretti, the largest Italian farmers' association, announced that France would regain its status as the world's largest wine producer, after having been overtaken by Italy in 2008.
France's harvest its expected to generate 4.8 billion liters (1.268 billion gallons) of wine in 2009, while Italy's output is expected to reach 4.7 billion liters (about 1.242 billion gallons). Coldiretti based the figures on FranceAgriMer agency and Italian associations ISMEA and Unione Italiana Vini (UIV) data published in July.
Coldiretti said that the 2009 Italian harvest is set to be of a very high quality, quoting comments from various winemakers who praised this year's grapes for their high sugar content.
