In yet another sign of the current state of the economy in California, Sunday, May 17, 2009, it was luci spente (lights out) for the Annual Wine and Food Festival organized in Carmichael, California, by the Sacramento Italian Cultural Society.

Carmichael, California
Bill Cerruti, the Society's executive director, said that presale of tickets was not going as well as anticipated, thus the organizers decided to pull the plug and cancel the event midweek before the due date. Cerruti added that they had a lot of last minute calls, so they probably could have pulled it off, but it wasn't a certainty. People who purchased advance tickets will be refunded.
Typically, the event attracts between 100 and 200 people, and Cerutti said that the Society plans to hold the Wine and Food Festival next year.
"We had good entertainment lined up," said Cerutti, "this has just been an uncertain year."
Italian culture lovers should have no fear as the Society is going ahead with its Summer Italian Festival, planned for August 1 and 2, at the Croatian American Cultural Center.
For ticket and information about the Summer Festival, please e-mail the Society, or call (916) 482-5900.
