ISMEA / UIV 2008 Italian Wine Production Forecast:
Sixth of six parts

Staff Writer – September 9, 2008

Regional Production (Continued)

The Calabria region follows the trend with a projected increase of 10% to 15% compared to 2007 and, thanks to the regular, slow maturation, the grapes are extremely healthy and present an excellent array of aromas. Harvest is anticipated 15 days, in fact, the earlier white grapes have already been picked with generally favorable results. Though the vines are very healthy so far, there are some worries because of the extended lack of rain and high temperatures, in particular for the hillside vineyards and those cultivated in sandy soil.

Drought could be a problem in Molise as well, where the increase is expected to be around 10%. In fact, the vineyards without irrigation system show stress for lack of water, while the others are developing optimally. Overall the 2008 production is expected to show a full comeback with output in line with the five-year average.

The only continental southern region which may turn out a production level with 2007 is Basilicata. The summer drought strongly downsized the earlier optimistic expectations.

The Sardinia output is expected to be 5% down compared to 2007, due to the lack of rain that has lasted now for several months. According to weather experts, this season has had the lowest amount of rain of the last 10 years, and only the vineyard supplied with irrigation are coping well and they grapes are expected to be of good quality and in satisfying quantity. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the Sardinian vineyards, which are small, fragmented and sometime in hard-to-reach places, many of them do not have irrigation and the output is expected to be very low. In addition, the heat wave which hit the island in the second half of August is making an already bad situation even more difficult.
