  • Marino, Italy: Quality Wines Pours from the Faucet
    October 15, 2008
KoreaEvery year Marino, a town south of Rome in the Castelli Romani (Roman Castles) wine-producing zone, celebrates the Sagra dell'Uva (Grape Festival), an annual event held at the end of the harvest, by routing the new wine to an ornate fountain in the main square of town.

This year however, citizens and visitors who gathered around the fountain with jugs, canteens, goblets and and beakers in hand, waited in vain for the yearly "miracle" to be performed by the local administration's engineers who, thanks to the the town's creative plumbing running below the streets, manage this feat.

  • ISMEA / UIV 2008 Italian Wine Production Forecast: Part 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6
    September 7, 2008
Italia dei ViniArticle in six parts presenting the projection by ISMEA – Unione Italiana Vini about Italian wine production, which sees the volume up 7%, but does not recoup the whole amount decreased in 2007.

Italian wine production is expected to be around 46 million hectoliters (over 1,215 million gallons), with the boot split substantially in two main areas: the South marks a substantial recoup over 2007, while the Northern regions repeat the low production values of last year. Quality-wise, the expectations are from good to excellent.

The 2008 harvest will be more generous compared to the previous year, though it will not reach the 2006 output. This is as much as the second reconnaissance on the field by ISMEA (Servizi per il Mercato Agricolo, or Services for the Agricultural Markets) and the Unione Italiana Vini (UIV, or Italian Wine Union) reveals. The projections point to 46 million hectoliters, or 7% increase over the 43 million reported by ISTAT (Italy's National Institute of Statistics) in 2007.

    August 10, 2008

  • Marketing European Wine: Resources for Small Producers
    March 20, 2008
European VineyardsThe European wine sector is an ancient one and part of Europe's distinct cultural heritage, as well as contributing strongly to the European economy. In February 2007, MEPs backed the idea of protecting the historical and cultural position of European wine production. The average holding per estate is less than 2 hectares (Eurostat Farm Structure Survey 1999-2000 – within the single states this ranges from 6 hectares in France to less than 1 in Italy). In addition, many wine producers are very small estates or family businesses, making wine as a craft, rather than industrial production. Some producers are located in regions with few other economic alternatives, thus the possible loss of wine production may create economic hardship, in addition to landscape deterioration and soil erosion.
