Molise, Basilicata and Calabria.
Harvest started a couple of weeks in advance in Molise, where the production is expected to decrease by 20% because of the drought. The developing phases of the fruit are considered good and the quality is expected to be high, thanks also to the fact that there haven't been pathogen attacks in the region.
Basilicata is expected to produce 20% less than 2006 and Calabria between 10 and 15% less with greater losses in the zones where crisis irrigation wasn't an option. In Calabria the quality of the grapes is fairly good, despite some problems with parasites.
Sicily and Sardinia.
According to the ISMEA - UIV projection, Sicily is the Italian region which registered the greatest loss, with a decrease in production of 30%.
It was already clear at the beginning of the summer that the harvest 2007 would be very scant with regards to the quantity. The culprit is peronospora, which hit hard across the island-region in the spring, annihilating the vintners' expectations from the beginning.
The province that was hit the hardest is Trapani, that is, the traditionally most productive zone of the island, where the poor development of the fruit followed the parasite's attack, and preceded the scorching heat at the end of August, characterized by hot sirocco winds.
In the areas not hit by the peronospora, and where irrigation was possible, the grape quality is good, while the sugar content is average. The harvest started about one week earlier than usual.
The Sardinian harvest started just a few days early, and the output is comparable to last year's.
The fruit progression toward maturation was good and favored by alternating sunny, hot days, and cool nights, in addition to the northwest wind which characterized the third week of August. Beside a few hotbeds of peronospora, there were no major problems caused by vineyard's parasites, thus the overall quality is very good, with alcohol content above average.
