It may be the drink of the Roman Gods, but Rajeev Samant wants to show Italy some Indian wine.
They say Italians only drink their own wine. But that didn't keep the Italian Trade Commission from inviting Sula Vineyards' Rajeev Samant for a week-long Indo-Italian food, fashion and film festival at Rome. The event is happening on the sidelines of the ongoing Rome Couture Week in which Delhi-based designer Suneet Varma is participating. "It's the first time Indian wine will be showcased abroad," says Samant, who recently started exporting his Sauvignon Blanc to the Italian import house Gaja.
Samant has taken a variety of wine—reds, whites, roses. "But I'm especially excited about the reaction to our flagship Sauvignon Blanc, and a new addition to Sula called the Reserve Cabernet Shiraz," he adds.
While Samant's wine flows, Rahul Akerkar of Indigo restaurant in Mumbai will be dishing out food to match the drink. Indigo was Sula's first client.
Samant hopes that the India festival in Rome will be an opportunity to explore more trade relations with Italy. "The business of wine is about socializing and pleasure, and I'm making the most of it," he says.
This happens to be the first time Samant is visiting Rome. "So besides the museums and the city, I can't give shoe shopping a miss."
